Notes for JAMES M. "J.M" MORGAN:

The 49th Regiment was captured by the Union Army at Fort Donelson, Tennessee on February 16, 1862. J.M. Morgan appears on a list of Tennessee prisoners who took the oath of allegiance to the United States at Camp Douglas, Illinois on August 29, 1862. He was released on August 30, 1862. The rest of the Regiment was Regiment was released on September 20, 1862 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Regiment re-organized on September 27, 1862. J.M. Morgan appears on a Company Muster Roll dated October 20, 1863 at Camp Cummings, Mobile, Alabama. It is assumed that he did not return to his Regiment after being released from the prisoner-of-war camp, however, since the Company Muster Roll remarks "Deserted. Took oath to the U.S. at Camp Douglas, Ill Aug 29, 1862.
